At Camp Shoshanim, the safety and physical well being of our campers and staff is our number one priority. Our Health Center is equipped with a private exam room, medication room, triage room and beds for campers to rest.
Our resident health staff consists of a doctor and registered nurses, who oversee the medical care of our campers throughout the entire summer, including those with unique situations such as allergies, chronic health issues, and those requiring regular medication. Our overnight Health Center is staffed 24 hours a day and our doctor and nurses live on campus to ensure appropriate care. Sick Call takes place after breakfast and dinner, and campers are encouraged to come in for a visit when they (or their counselors) think they need medical assistance. Nurses dispense medications at mealtimes and before bed from the infirmary. We are also only a short distance from an urgent care in our local area and a major hospital in Honesdale, PA (20 miles away).
If a camper is staying in the Health Center overnight or is receiving care for a unique situation, the health staff will consult with her parents. We also understand that young campers away from home with a health problem often need an extra dose of “tender loving care”. Our nurses understand that working in a summer camp requires them to be sensitive to the needs of children. It is essential that our nurses have not only the credentials to be a skilled RN, but have the right temperament to work with children as well.
Each summer, the simple goal of our dining room is to provide nutritious and well balanced meals that kids will enjoy eating. We strongly believe that food is a key step to ensuring that a camper has an enjoyable summer. Our campers eat cafeteria style with their bunk and counselors. Our counselors get to know their camper’s eating habits and food allergies and help them appropriately.
During the summer, campers are constantly on the go and it’s extremely important that they eat right to maintain their health and energy. We strive to put together a glatt-kosher menu that is both diverse and nutritionally sound. Of course, we realize that not every child is going to like every meal. That’s why we make sure that we always have multiple options available.
At breakfast, we offer a full cereal bar with 6-8 cereal choices, hot cereal, fresh fruit, bread, cheese, butter, jelly and yogurt. At lunch and dinner we offer a full salad bar with 10-12 items, plain pasta bread, butter, jelly and fresh fruit. These items complement our hot entrees, which can be seen by clicking on the Sample Camp Menu.
All breakfast and lunch meals are served in our dairy dining room on our “upper campus”, and all dinners (except for during the 9 days) are served in our meat dining room on our “lower campus”
We are a peanut-free camp, and have gluten-free options available.
To complement our 3 meals, we offer daily snack and cookies. We also encourage campers to bring their own water bottles to stay hydrated throughout the day. If your child has food allergies/intolerances, please contact us to learn about the different options we can provide.
